Translation of CAD drawings

Translation of CAD drawings is nothing more than the translation of technical documentation created in CAD software, which is used for computer-aided design. It is used for drafting, design as well as modelling with a high degree of precision.

Today, it is hard to imagine architects, designers or civil engineers working without the use of CAD software. CAD/CAM work uses solids, objects, meshes and documentation functions. In the context of translation of .dwg drawings it is the documentation functions and descriptions in the technical drawings that are of interest.

Translation of CAD drawings - the most important aspects

Technical drawings are universally understandable, transcending geographical boundaries. Of course, sector-specific knowledge is often required to understand them. This is because CAD software enables the creation of electrical, mechanical and architectural documentation, as well as the design of complex technological processes. So what then is subject to translation on CAD drawings?

Translating CAD drawings is basically translating the content found on CAD drawings. Those involved in CAD/CAM design are well aware of the importance and function of this content in certain circumstances. Therefore, I will focus immediately on the translation aspects.

The process of translating text on .dwg drawings itself is no different from translating a hoover manual or a business contract. The key aspect lies in the extraction of content from CAD drawings so that they can be effectively translated using CAT software.

Exporting the content listed above and translating it into the target language is half the battle. Using the right tools and having a minimum of experience with CAD and CAT platforms, these operations can be carried out quickly and efficiently.

However, due to the differences in the volume of the texts that result from the specific characteristics of the source and target languages, once the translation has been implemented, in most cases it is necessary to adapt the relevant objects directly on the drawing.

What is important from the point of view of a CAD drawing translation provider? The most crucial aspect is to receive a complete set of files from the client, including source files in .dwg/.dxf format, overview documents in .PDF format, and, if the job involves printing drawings to .PDF format, a plotter configuration file.

Experience in translating content on dwg drawings

We have been translating CAD drawings at Berlineo for as long as I can remember. One of our earliest clients to entrust us with such a task was a renowned construction company in Poznań. The order involved the complete construction documentation covering all trades for the construction of a chemical plant production hall on the outskirts of Poznań.

Our first projects involving translations of .dwg drawings were carried out in collaboration between translators and CAD/CAM software developers. The work was not supported by CAT tools, we did not use plug-ins to export data and the translation process was very cumbersome.

At present, we have a well-established working method, a dedicated team handling this type of assignment, and all the necessary tools in place. This enables us to develop even large CAD drawing packages efficiently and in a short time.
